Ronda New Bridge

General information on Ronda

The beautiful town of Ronda lies 60km up a winding mountain road from Marbella in the mountain range known as the Serranía de Ronda. It stands at an altitude of 739 m and has approximately 35,000 inhabitants.

It is one of the most visited towns in Andalucia with most people arriving on day excursions from the Costa del Sol.

Some artefacts found around Ronda date back to prehistoric times (as far as 28000 BC). Every architectural era is represented here including Roman, Arabic, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.

In this constantly expanding section we provide all the tourist information you'll need to know to make the most of your stay in Ronda.

Most of the important sights in Ronda can be seen in a few hours as most are located around the new bridge area and within the old part of the town over the bridge from the Parador.

Begin at the bullring which is one of the oldest and most beautiful in Spain. Adjoining Ronda’s bullring is the Bullfighting Museum which displays interesting relics of Ronda’s bullfighting history.

Next go into the gardens behind the bullring, along Paseo Blas Infante. From here are the best panoramic views over the mountains. Ronda is split into two sections by a spectacular 100m deep gorge called El Tajo. On one side is the old Moorish town and on the other is El Mercadillo which is a more recent urban section. The two parts are joined by the Puente Nuevo (New Bridge), so called because it replaced the original 1735 bridge after it collapsed, the the building of a new bridge was begun, in 1751, and it was finished in 1793. This master building has got a height of 98 metres, built with stone masonry which were taken from the depth of the Tajo's gorge. It allowed the conexion between the modern quarter of the city, called also the market's quarter, and the old quarter of the city, which allowed also the urban development of Ronda.
